I am so grateful that I was graciously offered the chance to review an up and coming product I'm sure most people will gawf at. (at first!) The Yantra Mat. Honestly it looks like a horrifying yoga mat at first sight. A padded cushion covered with 8,200 sharp plastic spikes is not an inviting or relaxing thought. It is an acupressure mat, designed to increase blood flow and circulation to provide a sense of relaxation and pain relief. I actually found this while perusing the internet searching for a new yoga mat and e-mailed them for more information and retailers in my area. They immediately shot back an e-mail detailing how it really couldn't be described in words, but that they could send me one to discover for myself. The mat utilizes the basic principles of acupuncture, without inserting needles. It hits multiple pressure points on the back or stomach (depending on how you lie on it) which increases circulation and lowers blood pressure, in turn supplementing an intense sense of calm and relaxation.
Truthfully, for the first 5 minutes I was on the mat it was painful. Not something I would consider relaxing, rejuvenating or mentally clarifying. It hurt, and that was all I could think about. The instructions for use warned me about this though. --- and they also recommended wearing a shirt the first time around, but I wanted the full experience and braved the sports bra. Not good. The sharp points are just that, and the feeling of being stabbed prevailed for quite a while. I held out though, and soon the pain subsided and was replaced by an intense warming sensation. My back felt like it was melting into the floor and was as relaxing as a deep tissue massage. I was drifting in and out of consciousness. You know that feeling after a fantastic yoga session, while you're lying in dead man's pose for final relaxation? It was like that, but was achieved after twenty minutes on a mat. Fantastic, and completely unexpected. They recommend starting out for only a few minutes and gradually increasing the time spent on the mat by 5 minutes each time you use it to build up a tolerance.
I do not personally have back pain on a regular basis, but could tell that this would be a very effective, fast and drug-free way to eliminate shoulder and lumbar pain.
You really don't need to be a yogini or be interested in acupressure to benefit from the Yantra Mat. I think that if you have patience and are willing to ride out the initial discomfort, anyone can accomplish a meditative clarity and physical rejuvenation from the use of the mat.

So glad to read this! I had seen things about this in magazines, and had actually been interested in trying one because I heard the mat can help with sleep problems, which for awhile I was having trouble with. I definitely believe in the power of acupuncture for certain things, so I wouldn't doubt that this would work for relaxation.
Thanks for the review. My husband does suffer from back pain so this may be something for him.
That's so fun that you were able to review this product! I had read about it online and in magazines and wanted to learn more. I'm glad to hear it felt good after a while; you made me worry for you with that talk of pain! My lower back often gives me aches and pains--maybe I could try this some day and see if it feels good. Shopping time? :)
By the way, dead man's pose makes my Mom say "this is my favorite workout move" whenever she does it. She's a goof!
yea i wouldnt have even thought about something like this.. i do tho totally see how this could benefit a lot of people.. and not just for muscle or joint pain issues, but as a de-stressor. great review on it, uve really got my interested! im already an acupuncture fan.. this just blows my mind tho!

Thank you for information. I totally agree with you about positive effects of acupressure mats. I personally use Pranamat Eco by Advaita. The principal of Pranamat eco is the same, but the big difference is that Pranamat is made of 100% natural materials and its filler is made of pure coconut fiber, - not sponge like in Yantra mat. For me lying on spikes for the first 5 minutes also very much hurts, but after that it brings a joy and relaxation into body. Very happy I have purchased my eco mat.
